Freckles

when i was a kid, got a cocker spaniel named freckles. when you tried to pet her, she’d roll over and pee on herself. her previous owner abused her, i could tell you that much. i misspelled her name on the doghouse, it took awhile to earn her trust.
i used to call her freckle-day-ous and make up songs about her, she had freckles on her nose, light brown spots on her white fur, these days, i miss her.

endless days i spent with her playing catch in the backyard. taking photographs of her, making them into sports cards. as the years went by, our family grew apart, freckles suffered the most. i couldn’t stand to be at home if we allow the truth to be told. my sister and dad had moved out, it was just my mom and me, she was paranoid and depressed, lost grip of reality. back in those days, i lived in fantasy.

it felt that weeks would go by where i wouldn’t see freckles at all. how she even got food and water, i honestly can't recall. before her time she died, the guess from a broken heart. i didn’t even get to say goodbye before dad buried her in the backyard and because of our neglect, freckles died alone, it was basically my fault, the guilt i still own, i wonder, had she found a happy home.

so Freckles, here’s an overdue farewell, i couldn’t care for you, no more than i could myself, i’m sorry, i failed.
